I have been known to write some funny things on prescription pads. “Mr.
_______ has back pain and should get a 25 handicap for golf this week.”
On one occasion, a man was complaining of a waning libido. I found out
he was over-stressed and a little too busy at work, so I wrote the
following: “Take your wife on a date once a week.” A few months later
he thanked me because it worked!
As fun as all that is, my prescriptions are usually more serious and
one of the most powerful that I write is for “Counseling at Shepherd’s
Touch.” Counseling? Powerful? I have heard some amazing reports from my
patients about progress they make with counseling. One man became an
alcoholic after his wife died. He hasn’t touched a drop in two years
after a few sessions of counseling. Another lady suffered with
unexplained pain for 10 years. She tells me the pain disappeared
instantly and permanently after she dealt with an emotionally painful
experience through counseling.
Most people are surprised that a family doctor would have so much
experience with emotional issues. They are surprised, I think, because
they don’t realize two things. First, emotional disease is very common.
Would it surprise you to hear that I see one or two new cases of
depression or anxiety every week? I always try to emphasize to my
patients that they are not alone, they are not the worst case and help
is available and effective.
The second reason I see so much emotional disease is that it magnifies
or even causes much of the physical suffering that brings people into
my office. In some people, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome,
addiction, insomnia, fatigue, obesity and many other conditions can get
better or go away entirely after counseling. Sure, I use medicine, but
I like to combine it with counseling or use counseling alone whenever I
can.
Why Shepherd’s Touch? I admit I refer to many different counselors
depending on the needs of the patient. I prefer to use Shepherd’s
Touch, however, because of their holistic approach. They use prayer,
Scripture and church involvement as part of the healing plan. I believe
my patients are well when they are physically, emotionally and
spiritually well. The counselors at Shepherd’s Touch are faithful to
use their counseling skills to foster the emotional and spiritual
wellness of my patients. For that, they have earned my loyalty.
